Louisiana Reports Lowest Shrimp Harvest Since 2002
USAgNet - 05/23/2019

The state of Louisiana landed just 254,000 pounds of wild-caught shrimp in the Gulf of Mexico in April, the worst April that state's shrimpers have had since at least 2002, the Southern Shrimp Alliance reports based on data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Other gulf states, including Texas, Alabama and the west coast of Florida, also saw landings slightly below what they saw in April 2018, according to SSA, a trade association that represents shrimp farmers that work in the gulf and also on the southeastern coast.

The experience has been par for the year so far, SSA said in its May newsletter. The the gulf states have landed just 9.5m lbs of shrimp in the first four months of this year, which is the lowest volume for the first third of a year since 2014 and 21.1% below the 18-year historic average of 12.1m lbs.

The one state that appears to be doing OK is Texas, where shrimpers have landed 4.3m lbs, slightly more than the 4.2m lbs landed last year and 5% above the 18-year average of 4.1m lbs.
