Kansas Corn Crop Expected to Set a Record

Based on October 1 conditions, Kansas's 2019 corn production is a record forecast at 816 million bushels, up 27 percent from last year's production, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Area to be harvested for grain, at 6.0 million acres, is up 20 percent from a year ago. Yield is forecast at 136 bushels per acre, up 7 bushels from last year.

Sorghum for grain is forecast at 197 million bushels, down 16 percent from last year. Area for harvest, at 2.40 million acres, is down 9 percent from 2018. Yield is forecast at 82 bushels per acre, down 6 bushels from last year.

Soybean production is forecast at 195 million bushels, down 3 percent from last year. Area for harvest, at 4.54 million acres, is 3 percent below 2018. Yield is forecast at 43 bushels per acre, unchanged from last year.

Cotton production is forecast at 320,000 bales, down 6 percent from last year. Record acreage for harvest, at 160,000 acres, is up 8,000 acres from 2018. Yield is forecast at 960 pounds per acre, down 117 pounds per acre from a year ago.

Canola production is forecast at 24.7 million pounds, down 27 percent from last year. Acreage for harvest is forecast at 18,000 acres, down 17,000 acres from a year ago. Yield is forecast at 1,370 pounds per acre, up 410 pounds per acre from 2018.

All sunflower production is forecast at 78.1 million pounds, up 5 percent from last year. Record low acreage for harvest, at 46,000 acres, is down 3,500 acres from 2018. Yield is forecast at 1,698 pounds per acre, up 198 pounds per acre from a year ago. Of the acres for harvest, non-oil sunflowers account for 11,000 acres and oil sunflowers account for a record low 35,000 acres.

Alfalfa hay production, at 1.96 million tons, is down 8 percent from last year. Area for harvest, at 560,000 acres, is down 8 percent from a year ago. Yield of 3.5 tons per acre, is unchanged from 2018. All other hay production, at 3.23 million tons, is up 23 percent from last year. Area for harvest, at 1.70 million acres, is down 3 percent from a year ago. Yield of 1.9 tons per acre, is up 0.4 ton from 2018.

All forecasts in this report are based on conditions as of October 1, 2019 and assume normal weather for the remainder of the growing season. Data were not adjusted to account for any potential departures from normal between now and harvest.

As is done every year in October, planted and harvested acreage estimates were reviewed for corn, sorghum, soybeans, sunflower, and canola and updated as needed based on all available data, including the latest certified acreage data from the Farm Service Agency (FSA). All States in the estimating program for these crops were subject to review and updating.
