Kansas Sorghum, Cotton Production Up Double Digits

Based on October 1 conditions, Kansas's 2018 corn production is forecast at 663 million bushels, down 3 percent from last year's production, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Area to be harvested for grain, at 5.10 million acres, is down 2 percent from a year ago. Yield is forecast at 130 bushels per acre, down 2 bushels from last year.

Sorghum for grain is forecast at 241 million bushels, up 20 percent from last year. Area for harvest, at 2.65 million acres, is up 8 percent from 2017. Yield is a record forecast at 91 bushels per acre, up 9 bushels from last year.

Soybean production is a record forecast at 198 million bushels, up 3 percent from last year. Area for harvest, at 4.71 million acres, is 8 percent below 2017. Yield is forecast at 42 bushels per acre, up 4.5 bushels from last year.

Cotton production is a record forecast at 335,000 bales, up 70 percent from last year. Acreage for harvest, at 159,000 acres, is up 69,000 acres from 2017, and a new record high. Yield is forecast at 1,011 pounds per acre, down 40 pounds per acre from a year ago.

Canola production is forecast at 28.6 million pounds. Acreage for harvest is forecast at 34,000 acres, down 28 percent from a year ago. Yield is forecast at 840 pounds per acre, down 480 pounds per acre from 2017.

All sunflower production is forecast at 71.8 million pounds, down 19 percent from last year. Acreage for harvest, at 50,000 acres, is down 12,200 acres from 2017. Both production and acreage for harvest are record lows if realized. Yield is forecast at 1,437 pounds per acre, up 9 pounds per acre from a year ago. Of the acres for harvest, non-oil sunflowers account for 9,000 acres and oil sunflowers account for 41,000 acres.

Alfalfa hay production, at 1.62 million tons, is down 21 percent from last year. Area for harvest, at 490,000 acres, is down 14 percent from a year ago. Yield of 3.30 tons per acre is down 0.3 ton from 2017. All other hay production, at 2.80 million tons, is down 30 percent from last year. Area for harvest, at 2.00 million acres, is down 5 percent from a year ago. Yield of 1.40 tons per acre is down 0.5 ton from 2017.
