NASS Reports Kansas 2018 Annual Crop Production

Corn for grain production in Kansas based on yearend surveys is estimated at 645 million bushels, down 6 percent from 2017, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Yield of 129 bushels per acre is down 3 bushels from last year. Area harvested, at 5.00 million acres of corn for grain, is down 4 percent from 2017. Corn for silage production, at 5.27 million tons, is down 2 percent from last year. Silage yield of 13.5 tons per acre is down 8.0 tons from last year. Producers harvested 390,000 acres of corn for silage, up 56 percent from last year. Corn area planted for all purposes, at 5.45 million acres, is down 1 percent from last year.

Sorghum for grain production in 2018 is estimated at 233 million bushels, up 16 percent from 2017. Yield, at 88 bushels per acre, is up 6 bushels from a year earlier. Area harvested for grain, at 2.65 million acres, is up 8 percent from 2017. Sorghum for silage production, at 900,000 tons, is down 19 percent from last year. Silage yield, at 15.0 tons per acre, is up 2.0 tons from last year. Area harvested for silage, at 60,000 acres, is down 25,000 acres from last year. Sorghum area planted for all purposes, at 2.80 million acres, is up 8 percent from last year.

Soybean production for 2018 totaled a record high 204 million bushels, up 7 percent from 2017. Yield, at 43.5 bushels per acre, is up 6 bushels from a year earlier. Area for harvest, at 4.70 million acres, is down 8 percent from 2017. Soybean area planted, at 4.75 million acres, is down 8 percent from last year.

Alfalfa hay production, at 2.14 million tons, is up 4 percent from a year earlier. The average yield, at 3.50 tons per acre, is down 0.10 ton per acre from 2017. Area harvested, at 610,000 acres, is up 7 percent from 2017. Alfalfa for haylage and greenchop production, at 120,000 tons, is down 52 percent from last year. Average yield, at 6.00 tons per acre, is down 4.00 tons from last year. Area harvested, at 20,000 acres, is down 5,000 from last year. Seedings of alfalfa during 2018 totaled 55,000 acres, down 10,000 acres from the year earlier.

All other hay production, at 2.63 million tons, is down 23 percent from last year. The average yield, at 1.50 tons per acre, is down 0.30 ton per acre from last year. Area harvested, at 1.75 million acres, is down 8 percent from 2017. All other haylage and greenchop production, at 650,000 tons, is down 9 percent from last year. Average yield, at 6.50 tons per acre, is unchanged from last year. Area harvested, at 100,000 acres, is down 10,000 acres from last year.

Oil sunflower production in 2018 is 61.5 million pounds, down 5 percent from last year. Yield, at 1,500 pounds per acre, is up 200 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at a record low 41,000 acres, is down 18 percent from 2017. Area planted, at a record low 43,000 acres, is down 9,000 acres from last year. Non-oil sunflower production of 12.8 million pounds is down 35 percent from last year. Yield, at 1,500 pounds per acre, is down 100 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at a record low 8,500 acres, is down 3,700 acres from 2017. Area planted, at 10,000 acres, is down 3,500 acres from last year.

Canola production of 33.6 million pounds is down 46 percent from last year. Yield of 960 pounds per acre is down 360 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 35,000 acres, is down 12,000 acres from 2017. Area planted, at 47,000 acres, is down 3,000 acres from last year.

Cotton production, at a record high 342,000 bales, is up 74 percent from last year. Yield of 1,066 pounds per acre is up 15 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at a record high 154,000 acres, is up 64,000 acres from 2017. Area planted, at a record high 165,000 acres, is up 72,000 acres from last year.

Summer potato production is 1.42 million cwt, down 9 percent from 2017. Yield, at a record high 430 cwt per acre, is up 50 cwt from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 3,300 acres, is down 800 acres from 2017. Area planted, at 3,300 acres, is down 800 acres from last year.
