Kansas Farm Numbers Unchanged from Last Year

Kansas's number of farms and ranches remained unchanged during 2017, according to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. The number of farms and ranches in the State, at 59,600, was unchanged from 2016. Numbers of farms and ranches in Kansas with less than $100,000 in agricultural sales decreased 200 farms from a year earlier while operations with more than $100,000 in agricultural sales increased 200 farms.

Land in farms and ranches in Kansas totaled 45.9 million acres, unchanged from 2016. The average size of operation, at 770 acres, was unchanged from a year earlier.

A farm is defined as any establishment from which $1,000 or more of agricultural products were produced and sold, or normally would have been sold during the year. The $1,000 threshold can be met by any combination of sales and government payments. Land in farms includes: crop and livestock acreage, wasteland, woodland, pasture, land in summer fallow, idle cropland, land enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program, and other set-aside or commodity acreage programs.
