Southern Kansas Begins Spring Tillage and Planting

For the week ending Sunday, temperatures averaged nine to 10 degrees above normal across most of the State, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Large portions of Kansas received measurable rainfall, however much of the State remained drier than normal. Spring tillage was active and planting was underway in southern counties. There were 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture rated 26 percent very short, 42 short, 31 adequate, and 1 surplus. Subsoil moisture rated 20 percent very short, 41 short, 39 adequate, and 0 surplus.

Winter wheat condition rated 7 percent very poor, 18 poor, 37 fair, 36 good, and 2 excellent. Winter wheat jointed was 17 percent, behind 29 last year, and near the five-year average of 18.

Corn planting was underway in southern counties and was 2 percent complete, equal to last year, and near 0 average.

Cattle and calf conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 23 fair, 67 good, and 8 excellent. Calving progress was 73 percent complete. Cattle and calf death loss rated 1 percent heavy, 57 average, and 42 light.

Sheep and lamb conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 1 poor, 14 fair, 81 good, and 4 excellent. Lambing progress was 85 percent complete. Sheep and lamb death loss rated 0 percent heavy, 56 average, and 44 light.

Hay and roughage supplies rated 2 percent very short, 5 short, 87 adequate, 6 surplus.

Stock water supplies were 4 percent very short, 13 short, 82 adequate, and 1 surplus.
