Kansas Plans Double-Digit Sorghum, Sunflowers, Cotton Growth

Kansas corn growers intend to plant 6.30 million acres this year, down 2 percent from 2019, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Soybean planted acreage is expected to be 5.00 million acres, up 10 percent from last year.

Winter wheat acres seeded in the fall of 2019 are estimated at 6.80 million, down 1 percent from last year.

Sorghum growers in Kansas intend to plant 2.80 million acres, up 8 percent from a year ago.

All hay acreage to be harvested is expected to total 2.70 million acres, up 18 percent from last year's acreage.

Sunflower producers expect to plant 80,000 acres, up 78 percent from 2019. Oil varieties account for 60,000 acres, up 62 percent from a year ago. Non-oil varieties made up the balance of 20,000 acres, up 150 percent.

Oat intentions are estimated at 170,000 acres, up 42 percent from last year.

Canola planted acreage is expected to be 10,000 acres, down 66 percent from 2019.

Barley area planted is expected to be 15,000 acres, up 7 percent from last year.

Cotton producers expect to plant a record high 200,000 acres, up 14 percent from a year ago.

Estimates in this report are based on a survey conducted during the first two weeks of March.
