Red Flag Fire Warnings Issued in Kansas
Kansas Ag Connection - 04/18/2018

Despite the recent round of rain and snow in the state, fire danger remains high in some areas of Kansas.

Dry conditions, coupled with high winds, the National Weather Service issued Red Flag fire warnings Tuesday for several Kansas counties, including Barber, Clark, Comanche, Edwards, Finney, Ford, Grant, Gray, Hamilton, Haskell, Hodgeman, Kearny, Kiowa, Lane, Meade, Morton, Ness, Pawnee, Pratt, Rush, Scott, Seward, Stafford, Stanton and Stevens. A Red Flag warning means critical fire weather conditions exist. Winds are forecast at 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 55 mph and relative humidity as low as five percent. Fire danger will only be slightly less on Wednesday.

The State Emergency Operations Center has been activated to a level 3 enhanced steady state due to elevated and extreme fire weather conditions across the state. The SEOC was operational Tuesday and was staffed by Kansas Division of Emergency Management personnel. No additional emergency support function partners were requested.

KDEM is cautioning the public to avoid any activity that could create a spark and start a new fire. Because open fires can quickly get out of control, even for experienced fire fighters, avoid open burning. Check with the local authorities in each county for information regarding county burn bans. Do not drive on or stop your car on dry or tall grass because your exhaust can spark a fire; do not throw cigarettes on the ground. Check and re-check any recent fires for rekindling.
