KU Museums Invite Lawrence to Learn about Plants
Kansas Ag Connection - 04/24/2018

The Spencer Museum of Art and the KU Natural History Museum invite the University of Kansas and Lawrence communities to explore the intertwined relationships of art, science, people and plants at the Day of Creativity. The free community event will be noon to 3 p.m. April 29 at both museums.

A variety of university and community partners will facilitate more than 25 demonstrations, performances and hands-on activities for all ages. Activities include making seed bombs, tie-dyeing clothing, pressing flowers and other plants, making paper flowers and printmaking with fish specimens. Demonstrations include making music from fruits and vegetables, peeling "coal balls" to reveal fossils and monitoring brain activity in the presence of plants. Stations will be indoors and outdoors at both museums, and participants are encouraged to wander between locations throughout the event.

"All the demonstrations and activities encourage people to explore aspects of creativity in art and science by asking questions, making connections, solving problems and creating things," said Jen Humphrey, director of external affairs for the Natural History Museum.

The theme of this year's event is "People. Plants. Play.," inspired by the Spencer Museum's current exhibition "Big Botany: Conversations with the Plant World."

"'Big Botany' incorporates scientific perspectives about plants, food production, climate change and more, so it is an accessible way for people to think deeply about environmental challenges and solutions," said Kristina Walker, director of education at the Spencer Museum. "The activities and demonstrations at the Day of Creativity are designed to deepen those conversations."

The event will occur rain or shine, and a complete listing of activities is available online.
