Feed Energy Announces 2016 Scholarship Recipients

Feed Energy announced today the recipients of its 2016 "Excellence in Ag" Scholarship. Corey B. Carpenter and Lori L. Thomas will each receive a $2,500 scholarship from Feed Energy for the 2016-2017 academic year.

"This year's scholarship recipients represent the innovation needed to meet the evolving needs of our industry," said Joseph Riley, Executive Vice President of Feed Energy. "Feed Energy is proud to support the passion these students have for animal production agriculture."

Corey grew up on a hog and dairy farm in Red Bluff, California which has had a lasting impact on positioning him where he is today. Corey has maintained a life-long passion for the swine industry. After graduating with a B.S. in Animal Science in 2013 from California State University, Chico, Corey then went on to pursue a M.S. degree in Animal Science with a focus in swine nutrition, from Oklahoma State University. Upon completion of an M.S. degree in 2015, Corey joined the Applied Swine Nutrition Team at Kansas State University to continue his graduate career. Corey's current research is focused on the effects of dietary Copper and Zinc on nursery/finishing pig performance. Corey says he knew pursuing a degree at KSU was the right step as he neared the end of his education. In his free time, Corey enjoys traveling to visit family and friends, exercising, judging hog shows, and of course, college football!

"The Feed Energy scholarship will help to cover the increasing expenses associated with pursuing higher education. The meaning and impact of this scholarship reaches beyond just covering basic scholastic expenses. This scholarship means Feed Energy takes a very serious and practical approach when it comes to demonstrating their support for future animal agriculture industry leaders, and having been selected by Feed Energy to represent this commitment is a great honor."

Lori is from St. Louis, Mo., and graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a Bachelor's degree in Animal Science in May of 2013. Following graduation, she accepted a job with Brenneman Pork at a sow farm in Thompson, Mo.. It was during this time that her interest in swine nutrition ignited and has been a driving factor ever since. In July of 2014, Lori started graduate school at Kansas State University with the Applied Swine Nutrition Team. The primary focus of her M.S. program has been centered on two main areas; weight gain and efficiency during gestation and portioning the total maternal gain between the sow and conceptus and also conducting evaluated space allowances for heavy weight finishing pigs. Lori also has a graduate fellowship with New Fashion Pork, Jackson, Minn., and is actively involved with data management and statistical analysis of research studies. Lori is very excited about her role at Kansas State University and eager to start her PhD in the fall.

"I would like to send my sincere thanks to Feed Energy for the "Excellence in Ag" scholarship. I was appreciative and excited to learn that I was selected as a recipient. This scholarship will go towards my first semester of my PhD in swine nutrition, starting this fall at Kansas State University. Thanks again!"

These two students were chosen out of 20 applicants for their superior leadership in the classroom, perspectives on the future of animal agriculture and for their overall support to the future of the industry.
