Pratt Co. Wheat Variety Plot Tour Takes Place at PCC

Farmers, agronomists, and more gathered at a wheat plot planted south of the baseball field at Pratt Community College to learn more about different varieties of wheat. Approximately 50 people attended the event hosted by the Pratt County K-State Research
and Extension office.
Romulu Lollato, KSU Extension Wheat and Forage Specialist, described 22 different types of wheat that were all planted October 26-27, 2017. All varieties of wheat had the same applications and were from Kansas State University, Oklahoma State
University, Kansas Wheat Alliance, Limagrain, Syngenta, and Westbred. He explained that every type of wheat is maturing later and growing shorter than normal due to a delay in planting and lack of moisture.
KSU Extension Plant Pathologist, Dr. Erick DeWolf, discussed the various diseases that occur in each type of wheat. The lack of moisture impacted the all of the wheat on a positive note as all diseases presented themselves at a low level.
Dr. Sarah Zukoff, the Southwest Area Extension Entomologist, provided an insect update during the session. She explained that brown wheat mites have been bad this year and she has been seeing some cut-worms. Participants assisted Dr. Zukoff in collecting
bugs from the wheat using a capture net during the tour.
The event was sponsored by The Farmers Cooperative Equity Co., Kanza Cooperative, Skyland Grain, Kansas Wheat Alliance, Alliance Ag & Grain, and Scoular. The PCC Ag Department under the direction of agriculture instructors Lori Montgomery and
Barrett Smith assisted with wheat in preparation for the event.
