Kansas Corn Acres Up 16 Percent; 95 Percent Biotech Varieties

Kansas corn growers planted 4.80 million acres this year, up 16 percent from 2015, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Biotechnology varieties were used on 95 percent of the area planted, unchanged from 2015. Growers expect to harvest 4.55 million acres for grain, up 16 percent from last year.

Soybean plantings are estimated at 4.15 million acres, up 6 percent from last year. Biotechnology varieties were used on 95 percent of the area planted, down 1 percentage point from 2015. Area for harvest, at 4.11 million acres, is up 6 percent from a year ago.

Sorghum acreage planted, at 3.15 million acres, is down 7 percent from a year ago. Area expected to be harvested for grain is 2.90 million acres, down 8 percent from last year.

Sunflower acreage planted, at 55,000 acres, is down 35 percent from last year. Oil-type varieties account for 39,000 of the acreage and non-oil, or confectionary varieties, making up the balance of 16,000 acres.

Oats planted, at 120,000 acres, is up 26 percent from a year ago. Oat acres intended to be harvested for grain, at 30,000 acres, is down 10,000 acres from the previous year.

Alfalfa hay acreage to be cut for dry hay is 600,000 acres, down 8 percent from last year. Other hay acreage to be cut for dry hay is 1.8 million acres, unchanged from last year.

Cotton acreage planted is estimated at 29,000 acres, up 13,000 acres from last year.

Winter wheat seeded in the fall of 2015 totaled 8.5 million acres, down 8 percent from the previous year. Acreage for harvest is forecasted to be 8.1 million acres, down 7 percent from last year.

Summer potato planted acreage, at 4,100, is up 300 acres from 2015. Harvested acres of 4,000 acres is up 400 from a year ago.

Canola acres planted are 25,000 and harvested 20,000 acres. No comparisons are available for previous year.
