USDA Estimates Planted Sorghum Acres to be Up 18 Percent
USAgNet - 04/05/2021

The U.S. Department of Agriculture released its Prospective Plantings report March 31, showing sorghum growers intend to plant 6.94 million acres, up 18 percent from 2020, with acreage rising in all six of the listed production states.

The most notable increase was observed in Kansas where producers are expected to plant 20 percent more sorghum acres. Texas, where farmers have already planted 34 percent of their expected acreage, intend to increase acres by 11 percent.

The widely-expected increase was driven by increased prices for sorghum over the last few months given China's significant purchases of sorghum and other U.S. feed grains.

Trade expectations for corn and soybean acreage were significantly higher than what was reported by USDA, and this surprise caused the limit moves in the futures markets for each crop. The next acreage report will be released on June 30.
