Pork producers from across the United States recently gathered in Washington, D.C., to advocate for policies they believe are critical to the future of American agriculture. The producers participated in the National Pork Producers Council's Legislative Action Conference, where they met with lawmakers and government officials to discuss industry priorities.
Representing farms from multiple states, producers traveled to the nation's capital to provide a firsthand perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing pork production. Their goal was to ensure policymakers understand how legislative decisions can affect family farms, agricultural businesses, and rural economies.
“Our message to Congress is clear: Stop the patchwork nightmare that California Proposition 12 has created for pork producers across the country. Our family farms cannot afford the uncertainty these conflicting state laws is creating,” said National Pork Producers Council President Rob Brenneman, a pork producer from Washington County, Iowa.
He added, “We’re not backing down from this fight for rural America. I’m proud of my fellow pork producers for taking precious time away from their farms to travel to Washington, D.C. and meet face to face with their elected officials. They are advocating for reasonable legislation that allows us to continue farming and pass down our farms to the next generation.”
One of the industry's primary concerns remains about the growing complexity of state-specific regulations. Producers stressed the need for a more consistent policy framework that allows farms to operate efficiently across state lines while maintaining a stable business environment.
Participants called on lawmakers to address these concerns as work continues the Agricultural Act of 2026 and future farm legislation. Industry leaders emphasized that clear and predictable regulations are important for long-term investment and farm sustainability.
The conference featured discussions with members of Congress and agricultural policymakers from both major political parties. These conversations covered a wide range of topics, including livestock production, rural development, food security, and agricultural competitiveness.
Producers also met with officials from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to discuss programs that support farming operations. They stressed the value of federal initiatives that help improve productivity, manage risks, and enhance the resilience of the agricultural sector.
During their time on Capitol Hill, pork producers visited nearly 175 congressional offices to share industry priorities. The group advocated on behalf of more than 60,000 pork producers and highlighted several areas that require legislative attention.
Among those priorities was continued investment in the U.S. Swine Health Improvement Plan. Producers noted that strong animal health programs help protect livestock, strengthen disease preparedness, and support the overall stability of the pork supply chain.
Workforce availability was another major topic. Farmers explained that many agricultural operations continue to face labor shortages and would benefit from policies that provide greater access to a dependable year-round workforce.
Trade policy also received significant attention. Producers encouraged federal leaders to support efforts that maintain strong export markets and create additional opportunities for American pork products around the world. International sales remain an important source of revenue for many farming operations and rural communities.
Beyond policy discussions, the conference served as an opportunity to strengthen relationships between agricultural producers and elected officials. Many farmers viewed these conversations as essential for ensuring that real-world farming experiences are reflected in future policy decisions.
The event also included recognition for congressional leaders who have contributed to agricultural and pork industry priorities. The awards highlighted the value of collaboration between producers and policymakers in addressing the challenges facing modern agriculture.
The conference concluded with a large industry networking event attended by lawmakers, staff members, agricultural organizations, and stakeholders from throughout the food and agriculture sector. The gathering encouraged continued dialogue on the future of farming and the policies needed to support growth and innovation.
As legislative discussions continue in Washington, pork producers remain focused on achieving solutions that strengthen animal health programs, improve workforce access, expand trade opportunities, and ensure a sustainable future for family farms across America.
