A major federal investment is set to strengthen rail infrastructure in western Kansas. The project will provide important upgrades to the Kyle Railroad, helping improve transportation efficiency, safety, and economic opportunities for agricultural producers and rural communities.
Sen. Jerry Moran, a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded approximately $49.5 million for improvements along the Kyle Railroad’s east-west corridor in Phillips County, Kansas. The funding was provided through the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) Program.
The investment is expected to enhance one of the region’s key transportation corridors. The Kyle Railroad plays a critical role in moving grain and other commodities from rural communities to markets, supporting local businesses and strengthening the regional economy.
Earlier this year, Senator Moran supported the project by submitting a letter backing a proposal developed by Phillips County, the City of Goodland, and the Kyle Railroad. The proposal focused on infrastructure improvements aimed at increasing operational efficiency and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the rail corridor.
Planned upgrades include repairs to existing rail infrastructure and the installation of modern technologies to improve safety and performance. These improvements are expected to enhance service reliability and reduce transportation challenges for businesses that rely on freight rail.
According to Senator Moran, the investment will support repairs, modernization efforts, and technology upgrades that will benefit Phillips County, Goodland, and surrounding communities. The funding is also expected to strengthen the railroad’s ability to support agricultural transportation across the region.
Local leaders and stakeholders view the investment as an important step toward maintaining a reliable transportation network. Strong rail infrastructure remains essential for agricultural communities, helping producers access markets efficiently and supporting long-term economic growth in western Kansas.
