Rising diesel prices are creating challenges for farmers, businesses, and consumers across the United States. According to K-State Extension agricultural economist Gregg Ibendahl, higher fuel costs are putting added pressure on agricultural operations and transportation networks.
Diesel prices are about $2.25 per gallon higher than earlier this year. While higher crude oil prices have contributed to the increase, Ibendahl said a global diesel shortage is the primary factor driving prices upward.
The shortage is largely tied to disruptions in global fuel supplies. Although U.S. refineries are operating near full capacity, international supply constraints have limited the availability of diesel in key markets.
Reduced diesel exports from Russia have intensified the shortage. Damage to Russian refineries during the war in Ukraine, along with disruptions in major shipping routes, has tightened global fuel supplies.
Strong international demand is also affecting the U.S. market. Ibendahl estimates that about 30% of diesel produced in the United States is exported, reducing domestic availability and contributing to higher prices.
For farmers, the timing is especially difficult as harvest season increases fuel demand. Since diesel powers most farm equipment, rising fuel costs can significantly increase operating expenses and reduce profit margins.
On a typical grain farm, higher diesel prices can add thousands of dollars in extra costs. These additional expenses can make a substantial difference in a farm's overall financial performance.
Consumers may also feel the impact through higher transportation and logistics costs. Ibendahl expects diesel prices to remain elevated for at least a year, with a return to earlier price levels potentially taking up to two years.
