Kansas Beef Council Opens 2026-27 Beef Program

By Scout Nelson

The Kansas Beef Council (KBC) is accepting applications for its Beef Certificate Program for the 2026-27 school year. The checkoff-funded initiative provides financial support and educational resources to Kansas family and consumer sciences (FCS) and ProStart teachers while helping students learn about nutrition, food preparation, and food safety.

Kansas FCS and ProStart educators can apply through the Kansas Beef Council website. Teachers who need additional information about the program can contact Abby Heidari, KBC Director of Nutrition.

The program connects Kansas beef producers with local schools, giving students hands-on learning experiences related to food purchasing and preparation. Participating teachers receive reimbursement funding to purchase beef for classroom labs, with support levels determined by enrollment numbers and school classification.

In addition to funding, teachers gain access to more than 10 standards-based lesson plans focused on beef selection, nutrition, safe handling practices, and cooking techniques. The Kansas Beef Council also provides instructional support and educational materials at no cost.

The initiative continues to have a strong statewide impact. During the 2025-26 school year, 142 schools across 58 Kansas counties participated, reaching nearly 21,800 students through beef-focused educational activities.

The program has also expanded beyond classroom instruction through the virtual learning series, “Beef: Processing to Plate.” Developed in partnership with the California Beef Council, the series helps students explore meat science, food production, and food safety. Recorded sessions remain available for classroom use.

The Kansas Beef Council also supports future foodservice professionals through student culinary competitions. At the 2026 Kansas ProStart Invitational, Eudora High School earned the award for the best beef dish, showcasing students' culinary skills and creativity.

By providing funding, classroom resources, and industry-supported learning opportunities, the Kansas Beef Council continues to strengthen agricultural education across Kansas. More information about the Beef Certificate Program and other checkoff-funded initiatives is available at www.kansasbeef.org.
