Kansas Farm Bureau launched Engaged Kansas in February 2023 to encourage more Kansans to consider serving in local elected positions. The nonpartisan initiative focuses on helping communities identify and support future leaders.
Local elected officials play an important role in shaping rural communities by making decisions that affect economic growth, community services, and job opportunities. However, many local offices struggle to attract enough qualified candidates.
To address this challenge, Kansas Farm Bureau created educational resources that help potential candidates better understand public office and the campaign process. These resources provide practical information and leadership development opportunities.
The organization also built a coalition of partners committed to strengthening Kansas communities. Partners include the Kansas Association of Counties, Kansas Chamber of Commerce, Kansas Bankers Association, Kansas Medical Society, and several other statewide groups.
Engaged Kansas promotes its programs through its website, social media channels, newsletters, and partner networks. The initiative has reached more than 3,000 people through presentations delivered to Farm Bureau, commodity, and community organizations across the state.
A major feature of the program is Campaign School, which is based on the American Farm Bureau Federation’s curriculum. In addition to the two-day training program, a shorter four-hour session introduces participants to the basics of running for office.
More than 175 Kansans have attended these mini sessions, helping build interest in public service and local leadership. The program continues to expand its reach through educational workshops and community engagement efforts.
The success of Engaged Kansas earned Kansas Farm Bureau a 2026 Award of Excellence in the Coalitions & Partnerships category at the American Farm Bureau Convention in Anaheim.
