The Kansas Water Office (KWO) has announced the opening of applications for the State Water Infrastructure Grant Program, creating new opportunities for communities to improve water supply systems and address important water challenges.
Previously known as the HB 2302 Grant Program, the initiative provides financial support for technical assistance and infrastructure projects aimed at improving water quantity and water quality throughout Kansas. The funding helps communities plan and carry out projects that strengthen local water resources and ensure reliable access to clean water.
The program became possible through increased funding to the State Water Plan Fund under Sen. Sub. for HB 2302, a bipartisan bill signed by Governor Laura Kelly during the 2023 legislative session.
Speaking about the importance of the program, Connie Owen, Director of the Kansas Water Office, said, “These grants help communities plan and execute water infrastructure projects to ensure a safe and secure water supply for their residents.”
The grant program mainly supports water-related infrastructure improvements. Eligible applicants include municipalities and special districts associated with water management that are organized under the laws of Kansas.
The program has also been updated following the passage of HB 2462 during the 2026 legislative session. The legislation introduced changes to the grant criteria, scoring categories, and administrative guidelines. These updates are intended to improve the application process and ensure funding is directed to projects that provide meaningful benefits to Kansas communities.
To help applicants understand the new requirements, the Kansas Water Office will host an informational webinar on July 23. Officials will explain the recent updates and provide guidance on submitting successful applications. Those unable to attend will be able to access a recorded version of the webinar on the official KWO website.
Applications for the grant program will remain open until September 15, 2026. Communities interested in applying are encouraged to review the eligibility requirements and prepare their proposals early.
Additional details about the application process, funding criteria, and webinar information are available at https://kwo.ks.gov.
The State Water Infrastructure Grant Program plays an important role in supporting long-term water sustainability in Kansas. By funding planning efforts and infrastructure improvements, the program helps communities secure dependable water resources, protect water quality, and build a stronger future for residents and local economies.
