Raccoon populations have increased across Kansas and the Great Plains, creating growing challenges for home gardeners. Sweet corn is one of the crops most commonly affected, as raccoons often feed on it just before harvest.
Kansas State University wildlife specialist Drew Ricketts says fencing is one of the most effective ways to protect gardens from raccoon damage. Because raccoons are highly adaptable, barriers must prevent them from crawling under, squeezing through, or climbing over the fence.
Electric fencing is a reliable option for protecting sweet corn and other crops. A properly installed fence with multiple wires can help deter raccoons while also keeping out smaller pests such as rabbits.
Gardeners are encouraged to install fencing before corn begins to ripen. Early installation can help prevent raccoons from becoming attracted to the crop and returning repeatedly.
Regular weed control around electric fences is also important. Excess vegetation can interfere with the fence's performance by grounding the wires and reducing its effectiveness.
Kennel fencing can serve as another protective barrier for gardens. Fence panels should be securely connected to prevent raccoons from finding openings and gaining access to crops.
In some cases, adding a top covering made from welded garden fencing may be necessary to stop raccoons from climbing into enclosed areas. With proper fencing and maintenance, gardeners can significantly reduce crop losses and better protect their harvests.
