K-State Selects Industry Veteran to Lead ASI Department

By Scout Nelson

Kansas State University (K-State) has appointed Scott Eilert as the new head of its Department of Animal Sciences and Industry (ASI). A K-State graduate with extensive industry experience, Eilert will lead the department’s teaching, research, and extension programs focused on animal agriculture.

Eilert joins the position after a 31-year career with Cargill, where he most recently served as Senior Director of Responsible Sourcing. During his time with the company, he held leadership roles in research and development, food safety, regulatory affairs, and customer technical services.

He has maintained a strong connection with K-State throughout his career. Since 2010, Eilert has served as an adjunct professor in the ASI department and has helped oversee Cargill’s partnership with the university since 2003.

As department head, Eilert plans to keep academic programs and extension activities aligned with industry needs. He also aims to expand partnerships and identify additional funding opportunities to support research and innovation.

Eilert grew up on a grain and cow-calf operation near Beloit, Kansas, where he gained early experience in agriculture. His farming background helped shape his interest in animal sciences and livestock production.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences from Kansas State University in 1989. He later completed both a master’s degree and a doctorate in animal science, specializing in meat science, at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The appointment reflects K-State’s commitment to strengthening ties between higher education and the agricultural industry. Eilert’s combination of academic training and industry leadership is expected to support student development, research growth, and industry engagement across the department.
