Approximately 300 Kansas 4-H members from 66 counties participated in the 2024 Kansas 4-H Livestock Sweepstakes on August 17-18. Hosted by Kansas State University’s Department of Animal Sciences and Industry, the event featured a range of competitions, including livestock judging, meat judging, livestock skillathon, and the livestock quiz bowl.
Participants who competed in livestock judging, meat judging, and skillathon qualified for the Kansas 4-H Livestock Sweepstakes. For the second consecutive year, Lyle Perrier from Greenwood County was named the 2024 Kansas 4-H Livestock Sweepstakes High Individual.
Other top 10 individuals included Reegan McDaniel (2nd), Hayden Stubbs (3rd), Lillian Hulse (4th), and Hannah Perrier (5th). Southwind District No. 3 claimed the Livestock Sweepstakes Champion Team Award for the best overall performance across all categories.
The top five teams were Southwind No. 3, Sunflower District No. 1, Wildcat District No. 1, Sedgwick County, and Southwind No. 1.
Winners of the livestock skillathon and quiz bowl will represent Kansas at national 4-H contests this fall. Additionally, an all-star team will compete at the national 4-H livestock judging contest in Louisville, with 15 young people selected to advance through a series of livestock evaluation workshops hosted by K-State’s Livestock Judging Team.
This year marks the third time Kansas will send an all-star team to the national 4-H meat judging contest at the American Royal. Participants will benefit from workshops with the K-State Meat Judging Team.
The Kansas 4-H Livestock Sweepstakes is sponsored by several organizations, including Lyons Ranch Family, Kansas Beef Council, Kansas Pork Association, and K-State’s College of Agriculture.
