Kansas Beef Council Supports Food Preservation Training

By Scout Nelson

The Kansas Beef Council (KBC) partnered with K-State Extension to support food preservation workshops in Riley and Cowley counties. The organization covered the cost of beef used during the training and provided educational materials, helping 28 participants learn safe, research-based preservation techniques.

In Cowley County, eight community members, including 4-H leaders, participated in hands-on training with two instructors. At the Riley County session, 20 K-State Extension agents gained practical experience that will help them share food preservation knowledge in their local communities.

The workshops focused on dehydrating beef to make jerky and pressure canning beef for use in soups and stews. Participants learned science-backed methods for preserving beef safely while exploring its versatility in a variety of meals.

Community members in Cowley County left with valuable skills they can use at home and pass on to others. Extension agents in Riley County gained the confidence and expertise needed to lead future food preservation programs across Kansas.

Through investments in community education and professional development, Kansas Beef Council continues to expand access to reliable food preservation training. These efforts help more Kansans safely preserve, prepare, and enjoy beef while promoting best practices in food safety.
