New Water Efficiency Funding for Livestock

New Water Efficiency Funding for Livestock

By Scout Nelson

The Kansas Department of Agriculture – Division of Conservation (KDA–DOC) has announced that cost-share assistance is available through the Livestock Water Efficiency Project.

This initiative aims to enhance water use efficiency in large-scale livestock operations, such as commercial feedlots and dairies, by helping facilities upgrade their watering systems with high-efficiency waterers, improved water controls, and advanced water recycling systems.

According to KDA–DOC, the program will accept applications beginning October 15, 2025, through November 14, 2025, at the close of business. Applicants must wait for formal approval before purchasing or subscribing to any eligible equipment or services, as expenses incurred prior to approval will not qualify for reimbursement.

To be eligible for this program, applicants must hold a current livestock water right with the state of Kansas. This requirement ensures that the program supports existing, legitimate livestock operations that have verified water usage rights.

Funding for this initiative is made possible through appropriations from the State Water Plan Fund. The program is administered by the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s Division of Conservation in partnership with the State Conservation Commission, which works to promote sustainable resource management practices throughout the state.

By helping livestock producers adopt more efficient water technologies, this cost-share project aligns with Kansas’s long-term goals of conserving water resources and improving environmental sustainability within the agricultural industry. It provides both economic and environmental benefits, allowing producers to reduce water waste while maintaining optimal animal performance.

Interested applicants can visit the Kansas Department of Agriculture website for additional details or contact Jake Dooling at jacob.dooling@ks.gov for more information.

This cost-share opportunity represents a key step toward strengthening Kansas’s agricultural resilience while supporting the responsible use of vital water resources for the future.
