USDA ERS Staff Explore Kansas Agriculture on KLA Tour

Approximately 20 staff members from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service (ERS) recently participated in a two-day tour of eastern Kansas organized by the Kansas Livestock Association (KLA). The program provided participants with firsthand exposure to various sectors of the state’s agricultural industry.

During the tour, ERS employees explored different segments of the beef supply chain while also gaining insight into the dairy and ethanol industries. The experience helped attendees better understand agricultural production, processing, and the economic contributions of these industries.

Tour stops included Tailgate Ranch in Tonganoxie, Mushrush Ranches near Strong City, Tiffany Cattle Company in Herington, and Hildebrand Dairy near Junction City. Participants learned about livestock production, herd management, and day-to-day ranch and dairy operations.

The group also visited the Walmart case-ready beef processing facility in Olathe and East Kansas Agri-Energy in Garnett. These visits highlighted how agricultural products are processed and moved through the supply chain before reaching consumers.

During a lunch stop near Council Grove, participants heard from KLA members Spencer Jones of Belvue and Tom Jones of Garden City. Discussions focused on agricultural production, industry trends, and the importance of livestock producers in the food system.

The tour was especially valuable for ERS staff members who are relatively new to the Kansas City area. By visiting farms, ranches, and processing facilities, participants gained a deeper understanding of Kansas agriculture and its role in the regional economy.

ERS is responsible for producing agricultural outlook reports, industry analyses, and research related to crop and livestock production. Organizers said the tour helped strengthen connections between agricultural researchers and industry stakeholders while providing practical insights that can support future research and policy work.
