Kansas students explore agriculture in Taiwan exchange program
Kansas Ag Connection - 12/01/2023

In November 2023, a group of six talented students from Kansas State University had the opportunity to represent Kansas in the Taiwan Agricultural Youth Exchange Program. This bilateral exchange program was designed to deepen their understanding of Taiwan's agricultural industry and explore how Kansas's agricultural exports mutually benefit both regions.

These students were chosen by the Kansas Department of Agriculture for their outstanding leadership qualities, communication skills, interest in cultural exchange, and a strong passion for agriculture in Kansas. The group included Jack Arender, Corley Becker, Katie Cummings, Alex Scovill, Rachel Sebesta, and Annika Wiebers, each bringing their unique perspective to the program.

Their itinerary in Taiwan was both diverse and educational. They visited the prestigious National Chung Hsing University, engaged with Taiwanese students, met officials from the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and toured various local farms and research institutes. This immersive experience allowed them to learn about different agricultural practices and the significance of sustainability in farming.

The students shared their experiences enthusiastically. Becker spoke about the deep cultural immersion and the diversity of Taiwanese agriculture, while Scovill highlighted the beauty of Taiwan and the importance of building international friendships.

Coordinated by KDA and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Denver, Colorado, the trip was sponsored by various esteemed organizations, including the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, K-State College of Agriculture, and KDA.

This program is not just an educational trip but a crucial step in strengthening international agricultural relations. With Taiwan being a significant trading partner for Kansas, such exchanges are crucial for future trade opportunities.

The Taiwan Agricultural Youth Exchange Program opens its applications each fall to college students, coordinated by KDA. It's an excellent opportunity for students interested in agriculture to gain global perspectives and create lasting international connections.
