The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced grants for two Kansas communities aimed at improving infrastructure to strengthen food supply chains, increase independent meat and poultry processing capacity, and lower food costs.
These investments are part of the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program (MPPEP) and are included in a larger national initiative covering 14 other states.
The two Kansas projects receiving grants are:
Top End LLC (TEAM Processing) in Kanorado: A $2,445,654 grant will help build a new USDA-inspected beef and hog processing facility.
This western Kansas facility will offer fee-for-service processing to over 50 local producers. It will also provide Organic Certification and process non-amenable species such as buffalo and yak, allowing producers to access new and better markets. Additionally, TEAM Processing will have on-site retail for local consumers. This project is expected to create 19 new jobs.
Real Kansas Meats LLC in Fall River, Greenwood County: A $6,871,380 grant will support the construction, equipping, and obtaining of inspection for a slaughter and fabrication facility.
This facility will serve an estimated 100 producers in Kansas and Missouri. The project is anticipated to create 117 new full-time jobs.
These projects are part of the USDA's broader efforts to support and expand the U.S. meat and poultry processing industry. By investing in local infrastructure, the USDA aims to provide more opportunities for independent processors, which in turn helps reduce food costs for consumers and supports local economies.
The MPPEP is designed to address critical needs in the food supply chain by increasing processing capacity and providing more options for producers. The program's ultimate goal is to ensure a more resilient and diverse food system.
The new facilities in Kansas will not only bolster the state’s meat processing capabilities but also enhance the overall food supply chain infrastructure. These projects are expected to have a significant positive impact on local producers and consumers alike, fostering economic growth and job creation in the region.
USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack emphasized the importance of these investments, stating, "By expanding meat and poultry processing capacity, we are providing more opportunities for producers and creating a more resilient food supply chain for all Americans."
With these grants, Kansas is set to play a key role in enhancing the nation's food processing capacity and ensuring a stable and efficient food supply for the future.
