Kansas City Fed Reports Mixed Outlook for Farm Economy

Kansas City Fed Reports Mixed Outlook for Farm Economy

By Scout Nelson

According to the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City's Second Quarter 2026 Survey of Agricultural Credit Conditions, farm finances in the Tenth Federal Reserve District remained under pressure, although the pace of deterioration slowed compared to earlier quarters. Strong cattle markets helped offset some challenges, while crop producers continued to face narrow profit margins despite modest improvements in commodity prices.

Financial conditions varied across the region, with cattle-focused operations generally performing better than crop-dependent farms. Lenders reported that smaller farms and operations relying heavily on rented land experienced greater financial strain, while drought conditions remained a concern in several areas.

Credit conditions continued to tighten as farm loan repayment rates softened, though most repayment issues remained relatively minor. Kansas and Nebraska lenders reported slightly higher levels of repayment challenges compared to other states in the district.

Despite weaker farm incomes, farmland values remained resilient. The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City reported modest increases in cropland values, while ranchland values rose more than 7% from a year earlier, reaching record highs and reflecting continued strength in the livestock sector.

Government support programs and strong land values helped maintain healthy farm balance sheets and limited broader financial stress. These factors provided stability for producers even as challenges in the crop sector persisted.

Interest rates on major agricultural loans remained largely unchanged during the quarter and were below year-ago levels, providing some support for borrowing and land markets. Looking ahead, the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City indicated that drought concerns and crop-sector pressures could continue, but strong cattle prices and resilient land values are expected to support overall agricultural economic stability.
