2025 Leopold Award: Call for Nominations

2025 Leopold Award: Call for Nominations

By Scout Nelson

The Kansas Leopold Conservation Award is now accepting nominations for 2025, celebrating agricultural landowners dedicated to advanced land management and conservation practices. This prestigious award, endowed with a $10,000 prize, highlights the commitment of Kansas farmers and ranchers in enhancing soil health, water quality, and wildlife habitats on working lands.

Background and Importance

Sponsored by the Sand County Foundation and American Farmland Trust, along with local partners such as the Kansas Association of Conservation Districts and the Ranchland Trust of Kansas, the award is part of a national effort across 28 states to promote environmental stewardship among private landowners.

Named after Aldo Leopold, a pioneer in conservation, the award draws inspiration from his vision of a land ethic that emphasizes sustainable interactions between people and their environments.

Eligibility and Nomination Process

Eligible candidates include those who have made significant contributions to the conservation of natural resources on their lands. Landowners can nominate themselves or be nominated by others by filling out a form available at www.sandcountyfoundation.org/ApplyLCA. The deadline for submissions is June 2, 2025, with nominations to be emailed to KansasLCA@sandcountyfoundation.org.

Selection and Recognition

Nominations will be evaluated by an independent panel of agricultural and conservation leaders from Kansas. The recipient of the award not only receives monetary recognition but also serves as a role model, encouraging other landowners to adopt similar sustainable practices. Previous winners have been celebrated for their innovative approaches to maintaining the ecological and economic health of their properties.

Event and Impact

The award underscores the vital role private landowners play in conservation and the sustainable management of agricultural landscapes. It fosters a greater public appreciation of the environmental efforts undertaken by farmers and ranchers who are often at the forefront of developing and implementing essential conservation techniques.

Support and Sponsorship

The Kansas Leopold Conservation Award is supported by numerous local and national organizations, demonstrating a collective commitment to advancing conservation efforts that benefit the entire community. This collaboration highlights the interconnectedness of agriculture and natural resource conservation, aiming to create a lasting impact on Kansas’s agricultural practices and beyond.
