ARCA annual meeting scheduled in La Junta - Colorado

By Scout Nelson

The Arkansas River Compact Administration (ARCA) is set to hold its annual meeting on Thursday, December 7, 2023, at the Otero Junior College Student Center in La Junta, Colorado. Starting at 8:30 a.m. MST, the meeting will delve into crucial aspects of the Kansas-Colorado Arkansas River Compact, including the operations of the John Martin Reservoir.

Key topics for discussion include a review of the reservoir's operations, compliance updates, and reports from various committees. Updates from state and federal agencies will also be part of the agenda. The meeting's detailed agenda will be available on the ARCA website.

Representing Kansas in the ARCA are Earl Lewis, Troy Dumler, and Zachary Gale, who bring diverse expertise to the administration's activities. The day before the annual meeting, ARCA's various committees, including Operations, Engineering, and Administrative and Legal, will convene at the same location.

A highlight of the event will be a special presentation commemorating the 75th anniversaries of both the Compact's signing and the completion of the John Martin Reservoir. This presentation is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. MST on December 6.

These meetings are open to the public, offering a unique opportunity for community involvement in water resource management. For those unable to attend in person, a virtual listening option is available upon request to Stephanie Gonzales at arca.co.ks@gmail.com on or before December 4.

Special accommodation can also be arranged but you should notify Gonzales at 719-688-0799 at least three days prior to the meeting.

The Kansas-Colorado Arkansas River Compact, established in 1948, plays a crucial role in resolving disputes and ensuring equitable water distribution between Kansas and Colorado. This annual meeting is a critical platform for addressing ongoing and future water resource challenges in the region.
