The week ending November 26, 2023, presented Kansas farmers with 4.9 days suitable for fieldwork, as reported by the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Soil moisture levels across the state showed a mix of conditions, impacting various crop developments.
Topsoil moisture was unevenly distributed, with 28% very short, 33% short, 35% adequate, and 4% surplus. Subsoil moisture displayed similar trends, with 37% very short, 36% short, 26% adequate, and a minimal 1% surplus.
In the Field Crops Report, winter wheat conditions were diverse, with 16% rated very poor and 4% excellent. Winter wheat's emergence showed a positive trend, standing at 93%, surpassing both last year's and the five-year average rates.
Cotton harvest progress trailed behind last year at 80%, but still exceeded the average pace. Sunflower harvesting neared completion at 92%, aligning closely with last year's and the average rates.
Pasture and range conditions varied, with 24% rated very poor and 1% excellent, indicating diverse grassland health across the state.
