In celebration of the vital role farmers’ markets play across the state, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has officially proclaimed August as Kansas Farmers’ Market Month. This annual recognition highlights the importance of farmers’ markets in connecting local food producers with consumers while strengthening community ties.
Farmers’ markets serve as gathering places in both cities and small towns, offering fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables, and other products. These markets not only support healthy eating but also help keep money circulating within local communities, supporting small businesses and encouraging economic development.
Over the past few decades, the presence of farmers’ markets in Kansas has expanded significantly. Since 1987, the number of registered farmers’ markets has grown from just 26 to more than 119. Markets can register with the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) through the state’s agricultural trademark initiative, From the Land of Kansas.
“We are excited about the growth and expansion of farmers’ markets across the state,” said Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam. “Farmers’ markets serve as a great way for producers to connect directly with consumers and sell their products locally.”
The KDA supports these markets by maintaining a central registration system that includes an interactive map and a comprehensive directory. These tools help residents locate markets in their area. KDA also offers education through newsletters, workshops, and webinars to ensure markets operate effectively and safely.
