The Kansas Department of Agriculture Division of Animal Health has confirmed two separate equine disease cases: Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) in Sedgwick County and West Nile Virus (WNV) in Harper County.
The EIA case was identified in mid-July after the National Veterinary Services Laboratory confirmed a horse tested positive. The horse later died from complications. All the horses on the property were quarantined. Some other horses have also tested positive, while those that tested negative will be observed and retested in 60 days.
KDA has created a surveillance area within one-quarter mile of the affected site and is working with local officials and horse owners to track other potentially exposed animals.
EIA is not a human health risk but can spread to horses, donkeys, and mules through biting flies, unsterilized medical tools, or contaminated blood. Some animals may show symptoms like fever or anemia, while others remain carriers without signs.
KDA reminds owners that EIA is rare in the U.S. but can spread easily without control measures. Kansas recently expanded rules requiring a negative Coggins test for horses used in exhibitions or changing ownership, in addition to testing for those entering the state.
The second case involves a horse infected with the West Nile Virus. The affected horse was not vaccinated but is responding to treatment. WNV is spread by mosquitoes and does not pass directly between animals or humans. Symptoms in horses may include fever, weakness, or severe neurological signs.
Vaccination is highly effective in preventing WNV. Officials urge horse owners to consult with veterinarians and maintain vaccination schedules. They also recommend reducing mosquito habitats by eliminating standing water and using repellents.
Both EIA and WNV are reportable diseases in Kansas, and confirmed cases must be shared with the KDA Division of Animal Health. For more details, visit agriculture.ks.gov/AnimalHealth or call 785-564-6601.
