Kansas Offers Cost Share Aid for Spay and Neuter Efforts

By Scout Nelson

The Kansas Department of Agriculture’s (KDA) Division of Animal Health has announced a cost share assistance program for licensed companion animal facilities to help reduce the cost of spaying and neutering cats and dogs. This initiative focuses on rural, unserved, and underserved communities across Kansas.

Funding for the program comes from state allocations for emergency animal shelter expenses and is designed to supplement services provided by the K-State Shelter Medicine Program. The program aims to improve access to essential veterinary services in areas where such care may be limited.

Under the Spay and Neuter Cost Share Program, eligible facilities can receive reimbursement for up to 75% of the cost of spay and neuter surgeries, with a maximum of $4,000 per applicant. Applications are open to facilities currently licensed with the KDA Animal Facilities Inspection Program. Submissions will be accepted until August 25, 2025, or until all program funds are allocated.

Spaying and neutering are important steps in preventing pet overpopulation and reducing behavior and health problems in adult cats and dogs. This initiative aligns with the KDA Division of Animal Health’s mission to protect the health and welfare of domestic animals throughout Kansas.

Detailed eligibility requirements, application forms, and submission guidelines can be found on the KDA Grants and Cost Share page at www.agriculture.ks.gov/grants. Completed applications and supporting documents should be sent to the KDA Animal Facilities Inspection Program via email at KDA.AFI@ks.gov.

By helping to offset costs, the program ensures more companion animals receive necessary care, ultimately benefiting both pets and the communities they live in.
