Cow Camp Builds Skills for Women Farmers

Cow Camp Builds Skills for Women Farmers

By Scout Nelson

Cow Camp 2026, organized by Kansas State University Extension, is designed to support and empower women in the cattle industry. This program offers hands-on learning and practical training for those who want to build skills and confidence in cattle management. It is open to beginners as well as women who are already involved in cattle operations and want to improve their knowledge.

The program will take place at two locations. The Eastern Cow Camp will be held on May 5–6, 2026, at the K-State Southeast Research-Extension Center in Parsons, Kansas. The Western Cow Camp will be held on September 9–10, 2026, at the K-State Western Kansas Research-Extension Center in Hays, Kansas. Each session is limited to 35 participants to ensure a strong learning experience. Visit, https://commerce.cashnet.com/NWEXTENSIONOFFICE for The Eastern Cow Camps registration.

Cow Camp focuses on real-world skills that can be used directly on the farm. Participants will learn about nutrition for cow-calf herds, including how to test feed and meet animal nutritional needs. They will also study stocking rates to understand how many animals can graze on available land.

The program includes lessons on how to use expected progeny differences to make better breeding decisions. Cattle handling is also a key topic, with a focus on safe and low-stress methods. In addition, participants will learn how to build herd health systems and work closely with veterinarians to prevent disease.

Hands-on activities are an important part of the training. These include pregnancy diagnosis, ear tagging, vaccination, and body condition scoring. Participants will also learn how to properly handle vaccines and create a simple vaccine cooler.

Cow Camp creates a supportive learning environment where participants can ask questions and gain confidence. It also helps build strong connections with other women in agriculture.

Overall, the program aims to prepare women to take active roles in cattle operations and support the future of the beef industry.
