Extreme Weather Threatening Viability of Small Farms


Increasing incidence of extreme weather events is threatening the future of small farms, says a feature in Time. For example, Kansas dairy farmer Jason Schmidt has seen milk production drop this year due to elevated heat and drought, while feed is more expensive due to failed crops. In addition, milk prices have dropped. Challenges like these make it difficult for small farmers to stay in business, and the dairy industry is already undergoing consolidation.
