The Kansas State University Collegiate Crops Judging Team achieved remarkable success, winning the 2024 National Championship. The team secured first place overall rankings in both Kansas City and Chicago competitions held in late November. This marks the team’s 33rd national title since the competition’s inception in 1923.
In Kansas City, the team excelled across various events, including Grain and Seed Quality, Grain Grading, Seed Analysis, and Plant and Seed Identification. Individual achievements included top rankings by team members. A sophomore in agronomy earned the first overall individual ranking, while two other team members secured second and fourth places.
In Chicago, the winning streak continued with the team earning first place in Seed Analysis and Plant and Seed Identification events. They also ranked second in Grain Grading. Individual accolades included the first, second, and third overall individual rankings.
"The exceptional success and winning legacy of our Crops Judging Team is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our students and faculty," said the dean of the College of Agriculture. "This type of applied learning is crucial for preparing students for real-world challenges in agronomy."
The team, coached by an assistant professor of crop science and supported by faculty and academic coordinators, also had alternate competitors who contributed significantly. The agronomy department praised the students’ accomplishments and the faculty’s efforts in guiding them to success.
Support from donors, including agricultural organizations and alumni, played a vital role in enabling the team’s participation in national contests. The team expressed gratitude for this continued backing, which fosters excellence in agricultural education.
Kansas State’s Crops Judging Team exemplifies the importance of experiential learning, preparing students for impactful careers in agriculture.
