K-State Names New Veterinary Dean

By Scout Nelson

Kansas State University has appointed Annette O Connor as the new dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. She will officially begin her role on August 2.

O’Connor has built a strong career in veterinary medicine, research, education, and academic leadership. University officials said her experience in animal health and higher education will help strengthen the college’s programs and expand its impact across Kansas and beyond.

As dean, O’Connor plans to focus on improving professional and graduate education programs while supporting research and community partnerships. She will also work to strengthen services that connect the college with veterinarians, students, and communities throughout the state.

Currently, O’Connor serves as a professor of epidemiology at Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. During her time there, she held several senior leadership positions and contributed to veterinary research and education programs.

Before entering higher education, O’Connor worked as a practicing beef cattle veterinarian in Australia. She also spent time working in Canada as a dairy veterinarian. These experiences gave her valuable knowledge of livestock care, animal health, and agricultural systems.

Her career later expanded into teaching and scientific research, where she focused on epidemiology and animal health studies. University leaders believe her background in clinical work, research, and education provides a strong foundation for leading the veterinary college.

O’Connor completed her bachelor’s degree in veterinary science from the University of Sydney. She later earned a master’s degree in farm animal production from the University of Queensland and completed her doctorate in ruminant health at the University of Guelph.

She is also recognized as a fellow of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in epidemiology. Her appointment marks an important leadership transition for Kansas State University’s veterinary medicine programs and future research efforts
