Beef industry stakeholders from across Kansas recently came together in Topeka to take part in a three-day leadership conference focused on education advocacy and industry awareness. The event provided members with a clear understanding of how leadership and engagement help strengthen the future of the beef industry.
During the conference participants learned more about the role of industry organizations and how they support members at the state level. A key focus was on the legislative process and how policies are shaped. Attendees visited the State Capitol where they observed a Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee meeting.
They also heard from industry lobbyists who explained how member interests are represented and protected throughout the lawmaking process.
The conference also gave members the opportunity to meet directly with their local legislators. These discussions allowed participants to share concerns and priorities related to beef and dairy production in a respectful and professional setting. This experience helped members feel more confident about speaking up on important industry topics.
An interactive advocacy training session was another major highlight. The session focused on the importance of clear communication and public engagement. Participants learned how different media platforms can be used to connect with consumers who want to better understand how their food is produced. Practical exercises helped attendees become more comfortable with advocacy in everyday situations.
In addition, education was provided on how checkoff dollars support the beef industry. Information was shared on how these funds are used for promotion of research and consumer education. Members also took part in a hands-on outreach activity by preparing and serving steak samples at a local grocery store. This allowed them to interact directly with shoppers and answer questions about beef.
The conference concluded with tours of foodservices and distribution facilities. These visits helped attendees understand how beef products are marketed handled and sold beyond the farm. Overall, the conference offered valuable learning experiences that strengthened leadership skills and encouraged active involvement in the beef industry.
