Kansas braces for first fall HPAI case in Pottawatomie County

Kansas braces for first fall HPAI case in Pottawatomie County

By Scout Nelson

The Kansas Department of Agriculture is on high alert following a presumptive positive case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Pottawatomie County, potentially marking the state's first fall case. “This is a critical time to safeguard your backyard flocks,” emphasized Dr. Justin Smith, Kansas Animal Health Commissioner.

With fall's arrival, there's a nationwide resurgence of HPAI, impacting states neighboring Kansas — Missouri, Oklahoma, and Colorado. The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) is advising poultry owners, from small backyard enthusiasts to large commercial producers, to reinforce their biosecurity measures.

Analysis indicates the HPAI spread mainly originates from wild migratory waterfowl, posing a significant risk to free-range poultry.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza, known for its rapid spread and potential to cause severe illness or sudden death in birds, has affected a broader range of species in this outbreak, including wild and domestic waterfowl.

Symptoms to watch for include respiratory issues, diminished energy and appetite, reduced egg production, incoordination, and sudden death. Immediate veterinary contact is advised upon symptom detection. For assistance, reach out to KDA’s Division of Animal Health on 833-765-2006.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention assure that these HPAI cases pose no immediate public health threat. Infected birds and eggs will not enter the food supply chain. Cooking poultry and eggs to an internal temperature of 165 ˚F remains a recommended general food safety practice.

For more detailed information about HPAI, including updates on confirmed cases and flock biosecurity, contact them at 833-765-2006.
