Based on October 1 conditions, Kansas's 2022 corn production is forecast at 592 million bushels, down 21% from last year's production, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Area to be harvested for grain, at 5.15 million acres, is down 5% from a year ago. Yield is forecast at 115 bushels per acre, down 24 bushels from last year.
Sorghum for grain is forecast at 133 million bushels, down 50% from last year. Area for harvest, at 3.10 million acres, is down 9% from 2021. Yield is forecast at 43 bushels per acre, down 35 bushels from last year.
Soybean production is forecast at 140 million bushels, down 27% from last year. Area for harvest, at 5.00 million acres, is 4% above 2021. Yield is forecast at 28 bushels per acre, down 12 bushels from last year.
Cotton production is forecast at 170,000 bales, down 9% from last year. Acreage for harvest, at 152,000 acres, is up 50,000 acres from 2021. Yield is forecast at 537 pounds per acre, down 343 pounds per acre from a year ago.
Canola production is forecast at 3.78 million pounds, down 52% from last year. Acreage for harvest is forecast at 7,000 acres, up 500 acres from a year ago. Yield is forecast at 540 pounds per acre, down 660 pounds per acre from 2021.
All sunflower production is forecast at 55.0 million pounds, up 4% from last year. Acreage for harvest, at 44,000 acres, is up 11,000 acres from 2021. Yield is forecast at 1,250 pounds per acre, down 350 pounds per acre from a year ago. Of the acres for harvest, non-oil sunflowers account for 14,000 acres and oil sunflowers account for 30,000 acres.
Alfalfa hay production, at 2.17 million tons, is down 13% from last year. Area for harvest, at 700,000 acres, is up 1% from a year ago. Yield of 3.10 tons per acre is down 0.5 ton from 2021.
All other hay production, at 2.80 million tons, is down 15% from last year. Area for harvest, at 2.00 million acres, is unchanged from a year ago. Yield of 1.40 tons per acre is down 0.25 ton from 2021.
