Kansas Hog Inventory Down 6 Percent in August



Kansas inventory of all hogs and pigs on September 1, 2022, was 1.93 million head, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. This was down 6% from September 1, 2021, but up 1% from June 1, 2022.

Breeding hog inventory, at 160,000 head, was down 3% from September 1, 2021, but up 3% from last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 1.77 million head, was down 6% from last year, but up 1% from last quarter.

The June-August 2022 Kansas pig crop, at 927,000 head, was down 2% from 2021. Sows farrowed during the period totaled 85,000 head, down 3% from last year. The average pigs saved per litter was 10.90 for the June-August period, compared to 10.80 last year.

Kansas hog producers intend to farrow 82,000 sows during the September-November 2022 quarter, down 4% from the actual farrowings during the same period a year ago. Intended farrowings for December 2022-February 2023 are 77,000 sows, down 6% from the actual farrowings during the same period a year ago.
