Kansas Farmers Union (KFU) is set to hold its 117th Annual State Convention this November, featuring expert-led sessions, policy updates, and networking for members and the public. As KFU President Donn Teske states, “Our annual convention is always great, but this year it feels like it’s going to be even more special.”
The convention begins on November 18-19 with a pre-convention session focused on specialty crops, co-hosted by Common Ground Producers & Growers. This training is beneficial for both urban and rural growers, covering canning, marketing, and more.
The main convention kicks off on November 20 with a keynote from Dãnia Davy, founder of Land & Liberation, who will discuss sustainable land practices. Other speakers include author Lucas Bessire, who will lead a discussion on water resources in the High Plains, and Doug O’Brien from the National Cooperative Business Association, sharing insights on cooperative growth.
Attendees can also enjoy a tour of Kansas' only operating hydroelectric plant, Bowersock Mills & Power Company, and a banquet with awards and auctions.
On November 21, speakers will cover policy and environmental topics, including updates on the Farm Bill, state legislative outlook, water conservation, and sustainable agriculture. Immigration Attorney Valerie Sprout will discuss programs that support rural communities, and Smoky Hills PBS’ Max Aguiar will highlight historical food conservation efforts.
The convention concludes with grassroots policy development, allowing members to propose, debate, and adopt policies for the coming year. KFU board elections will also take place.
