Smart selection of early calving heifers advised by k-state experts

Smart selection of early calving heifers advised by k-state experts

By Scout Nelson

In a recent episode of the Cattle Chat podcast, Kansas State University's beef cattle experts shared valuable insights on cattle management. The focus of their discussion was the strategic selection and care of bred heifers. They emphasized the importance of isolating new cattle, especially heifers, upon arrival to prevent disease spread and allow them to acclimate.

K-State veterinarian Brian Lubbers stressed the significance of a quarantine period for new herd additions. This isolation helps new cattle adjust to their environment and reduces the risk of disease transmission. It's essential to ensure these new additions have no direct contact with the rest of the herd during this period.

When incorporating purchased bred heifers into a herd, understanding the seller’s vaccination history is crucial, according to K-State veterinarian Bob Larson. Larson advised ensuring that bred heifers are well-vaccinated against diseases that could cause abortions. He also recommended considering an additional vaccination as they approach calving to align with the new herd's health protocols.

The timing of the heifers' calving is also crucial. Larson suggests selecting heifers that are due to calve early in the season. Heifers calving later than the main herd may struggle to integrate effectively in the long term. K-State veterinarian Brad White added that early calving helps heifers have a longer postpartum interval, increasing their chances of successful breeding in the subsequent season.

K-State beef cattle nutritionist Phillip Lancaster highlighted the importance of managing the bred heifers' nutrition, particularly in their last trimester. Heifers at this stage not only need nutrition for the fetus but also for their own growth. Lancaster recommends maintaining a body condition score of six to ensure the heifers are not thin entering the calving season.

These expert recommendations underscore the importance of careful selection and management of bred heifers in cattle herds, focusing on health, nutrition, and timely calving for optimal herd integration and productivity.
