USD 413 new center offers livestock learning

By Scout Nelson

USD 413 is set to build an Animal Science Learning Center, providing students the opportunity to work directly with livestock on school grounds. The center will be on five acres of land donated by Jim and Desiree Kepley, just south of the high school. The project is led by FFA advisory members Ron Flowers and Amy Hendrickson, who have long envisioned such a facility.

The new center will be a significant addition to the school’s agricultural program, which has seen rapid growth since its revival in 2018. The facility will be one of the first of its kind in Kansas, allowing students to engage with animals and better understand animal science concepts.

The building will measure 40 by 100 feet, with overhangs expanding the structure to 60 by 120 feet. It will include a classroom for 20 to 30 students and space to house various types of livestock.

The project is supported by a community fundraising effort, with a goal of raising $1.4 million. Nearly $500,000 has already been secured, thanks to generous donations from individuals and local businesses.

The USD 413 Foundation, a non-profit organization, is also involved, allowing donations to be tax-deductible. Construction is expected to begin next spring or summer, with the goal of benefiting students and the FFA program for years to come.
