USDA ends 2024 weekly crop progress updates

For the week ending December 15, 2024, the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service reported 6.3 days suitable for fieldwork. The final weekly Crop Progress and Condition report for the season provided updates on moisture levels, winter wheat conditions, and cotton harvest.

Moisture Levels

Topsoil moisture supplies were rated as follows:

5% very short

20% short

72% adequate

3% surplus

Subsoil moisture supplies were reported as:

7% very short

28% short

64% adequate

1% surplus

Field Crops Update

Winter wheat condition ratings showed mixed results, with:

2% very poor

8% poor

34% fair

49% good

7% excellent

Cotton harvesting reached 95%, close to 96% from the same time last year and slightly above the five-year average of 91%.

Pasture and Range Conditions

Pasture and range conditions were reported as:

10% very poor

18% poor

46% fair

25% good

1% excellent

The USDA expressed appreciation to county FSA and extension staff for their continued efforts in supplying the data necessary for these reports.

Future Reports

This marks the end of the weekly Crop Progress reports for 2024. Monthly reports will now replace weekly updates from December through February. The first monthly report for the week ending January 5 will be issued on January 6, 2025. Weekly updates for the 2025 season will resume on March 10, 2025.

These reports remain a vital resource for tracking crop conditions, moisture levels, and harvest progress, supporting agricultural decision-making across the country.
