The Arkansas Department of Agriculture is now welcoming applications for its esteemed Arkansas Century Farm Program. This initiative serves to honor the enduring legacy of families who have owned and operated the same land for at least a century, thereby contributing significantly to the state’s agricultural history. Families have until June 30, 2025, to apply for recognition in this prestigious program.
Program Overview and History: Launched in 2012, the Arkansas Century Farm Program acknowledges the historical importance and enduring presence of farm families across the state. It underscores the vital role these families have played in sustaining Arkansas's rich agricultural heritage.
Participation in the program is completely voluntary and free of charge, making it accessible to all eligible farm owners. To date, 645 farms have been officially recognized as Century Farms.
Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible for the 2025 induction, farms must meet specific requirements:
The farm must have been continuously owned by the same family for 100 years by December 31, 2025. Family ownership can include direct descendants such as children, grandchildren, and siblings, as well as nephews or nieces, whether by birth, marriage, or adoption.
The farm must encompass at least 10 acres of the original land acquisition and must contribute financially to the farm’s overall income.
Recognition and Awards: Farms that meet these criteria and are selected for the program will be honored with a personalized Arkansas Century Farm certificate. Additionally, they will receive a metal sign that proudly displays the farm's name and the year it was established, serving as a lasting tribute to their century-long commitment to agriculture.
Application Process: Interested parties are encouraged to submit their applications by the June 30, 2025, deadline. Applications can be completed and submitted through the designated online portal. For further details or assistance with the application process, applicants can contact Beth Moore at beth.moore@agriculture.arkansas.gov or call (501) 539-4027.
This program not only celebrates historical agricultural practices but also reinforces the importance of family farms in developing sustainable farming methods and preserving Arkansas’s agricultural lands for future generations.
