Minnesota Corn Growers Association (NCGA) president Dana Allen-Tully voiced significant concerns before the House Agriculture Committee today, stressing the need for a fortified farm bill.
Addressing policymakers, she illustrated the dire situation facing farmers, stating, "Unless conditions change, I believe we’re heading into a perfect storm, a storm that I don’t think will be fully appreciated until early next year when farmers try to get loans but are unable to do so because they cannot demonstrate the ability to cash flow."
This plea for a strengthened farm bill comes at a time when the financial stakes for farmers are higher than ever, with every planting season posing great financial risks.
The importance of the farm bill was further emphasized by Harold Wolle, president of the National Corn Growers Association, who highlighted the crucial roles of USDA programs in providing a safety net during economic downturns and helping to cultivate foreign markets.
Recently, over 200 corn growers rallied on Capitol Hill to advocate for timely action on the farm bill, emphasizing its vital importance to their livelihoods.
With the House Agriculture Committee having already marked up its version of the bill, it is now up to both chambers and the Senate committee to finalize and pass the legislation.
The concerted efforts of these corn growers underscore the urgency and critical need for legislative action to support the agricultural sector during increasingly challenging times.
