Ensure safe school lunches and allergen care

Ensure safe school lunches and allergen care

By Jamie Martin

As students head back to school, parents face the important task of packing lunches that are not only nutritious but also safe from foodborne illnesses and allergens.

The USDA stresses the importance of good hygiene and proper food handling to prevent illness. Before preparing food, washing hands and sanitizing surfaces are essential steps. Use separate tools and spaces for raw and allergenic items to avoid cross-contamination.

Cooking at the right temperatures and storing food properly are crucial. For example, meats should reach safe internal temperatures, and lunches should be kept cool with frozen gel packs or insulated containers to maintain safe temperatures.

Moreover, for kids with allergies, understanding and avoiding the "Big 9" allergens is critical. Parents should educate their children on safe eating practices and ensure all food items are clearly labeled with any allergen information.

By following these safety tips, parents can ensure their children enjoy their meals safely and stay healthy throughout the school year.

For more information, the USDA provides resources and guidelines on food safety and allergen management on their website.
