Top cattle honors seized at beef fest

Top cattle honors seized at beef fest

By Scout Nelson

The Flint Hills Beef Fest in Emporia recently concluded with grand awards going to local ranchers who demonstrated excellence in cattle rearing and performance. Matt and Julia Anderson from Alma, and Joe and Debbie Reinert from Cassoday, emerged as the grand winners in an event that combined results from the grass futurity and live stocker show.

The event showcased a variety of entries where cattle were judged based on their performance in both the grass futurity, which measures the average daily gain on pasture, and the live stocker show. The Andersons’ steers and the Reinerts’ heifers were recognized for their impressive results across both competitions.

In the live stocker show’s steer division, an entry from Brandon Litch and Kelsey Porter took first place, while the Andersons placed third. In the heifer division, Brad and Michelle Haun’s entry won first place, with the Reinerts’ heifers finishing third. The live stocker show proved competitive with numerous local ranchers showcasing top-quality cattle.

The grass futurity highlighted cattle that excelled in pasture growth, with Wes Cahoone and Lee Glanville taking the top spot for steers. Derek and Kerri Jackson’s heifers won the heifer futurity, with the Reinerts’ heifers closely following in second place.

This annual event promotes the local agriculture and cattle rearing industries and provides a platform for ranchers to showcase their commitment to quality and sustainability in cattle production. The Flint Hills Beef Fest continues to be a pivotal event for recognizing the agricultural prowess of Kansas ranchers.
